Michael Whelan's site asserts what I had already suspected: images of the actual covers of the books (i.e. with the title, author and etc. on it) are legal to post, while the underlying art is copyright protected and can only be used with permission. So, rather than illegally posting these images myself--as many websites do--I have pointers to the original artists' sites, from which most covers can be found.
